The help panel on the left hand side gives examples for where you should place the points. As a general guide try to place the point in the center of the relevant joint so that the bone will run down the center of the limb. The hip points are probably the most tricky, but as a guide place them in the middle of the leg (so that the bone to the knee will be centered in the leg) and at a height that is slightly below where a belt would be worn.
